The mid-afternoon sun was delightfully, almost insidiously warm on Eddie's chest and arms as he passed through the center of town. The Emboar at his side huffed with curiosity as she eyed some of the passers-by, but her trainer had not a care in the world on their leisurely stroll towards the western exit of Petalburg. He felt like he could just curl up right in the middle of the street and take a nap, warm and content as a Meowth in a sunbeam. [break][break]

As it turned out, though, someone else had beaten him to it. If it hadn't been for Lynch's large hand grabbing him by the back of his shirt, Eddie would have ran right into the Slaking snoozing smack-dab in the middle of the path, [break][break]

“Hey, uh, buddy? Couldja move on outta here? Some of us are tryin' ta get back home.” [break][break]

The large ape didn't have much to say in response and just snorted drowsily as it rolled over. Well, this was a real pickle; the path narrowed here where Petalburg ended and the route beyond began, and just walking around the ape would prove to be difficult. They were tremendously strong and tremendously fierce when they weren't being one of Arceus' laziest creations; Eddie shuddered to think of what might happen if he got caught by one of those huge arms trying to navigate his way around the lazy Pokemon. [break][break]

So he stopped, scratching at his chin as he stared at the creature. There had to be some kind of solution to this problem. He hoped to find it soon, too, because he'd have to leave town before long if he wanted to make it back to Rustboro before dark.

“If we keep up the pace, we can be at Old Man Stanley’s house in no time!” his suggestion was met with chirps from his furret as he skittered ahead of Benji on the path. It wasn’t an emergency housecall, luckily, but the senior had a crotchety old feraligatr with a bad tooth. From the sounds of it, if they could pull it now, it’d save later headache–[break][break]

“Oho?” Lost in his own little world, Benji didn’t initially notice the other travelers. The shadow of the slaking, and its hulking form blocking the way ahead was much, much too distracting. Undeterred, he marched up to it, fingers wound tight around the straps of his knapsack. “You are in the path, good sir,” he said merrily, bending at the waist so he was nose to nose with it. Though honestly, it’s nose was arguably the size of half his head. It promptly huffed and exasperated breath through its nostrils into his face. “Well alright, then!” And then he laughed.[break][break]

Finally, he stepped back, the clinician in him automatically doing a survey of the large pokemon, scanning what he could see to ensure that it was hopefully in proper health. But from its demeanor, Benji got the sense that it was just fine. Light brown eyes skirted sideways, and only then did he fully register the fact that he’d completely neglected the other party.[break][break]

And that he probably looked like a crazy man, but this didn’t bother him much.[break][break]

“Woah! That’s a big’un!” Ben’s hands found his hips as he craned backward, trying to get the full scope of the slaking from up close. One soon rose, though, shielding his eyes from the sun as the large, lazy pokemon rose tall. Too tall to clamber over, he supposed. Not that the setback dimmed his enthusiastic expression.[break][break]

He swiveled to the side, finger-visor still shadowing his face–only dropping away when his eyes fixed on the other traveler waylaid by the roadblock. “This your slaking?” he asked, unperturbed. A finger pointed over at the superduper big pokemon, then turned inward and pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose as he blinked.[break][break]

“If not, we’re in a bit of a pickle, huh?” His tone of voice indicated no such distress. Temporarily, he’d grown distracted from the visit he’d been intending to make as he smiled widely at the stranger.

Eddie jolted slightly, caught entirely off-guard by the newcomer and his Furret, but his brow furrowed with confusion as he watched the man waltz up to the Slaking like it wasn't one of Hoenn's most lethal creatures. The stranger regarded the extremely large ape with a lackadaisical sort of cheer as Eddie stared, head inclining just slightly to the right, watching as the man poked and prodded at a Pokemon that Eddie was quite sure could snap him in half like a twig. Maybe this guy knew something about the species that Eddie didn't, though. Or maybe he just had a death wish; it was hard to tell when it came to folks in these parts, he'd found, [break][break]

“Oh, uh, me?” Eddie replied distractedly. He was kinda surprised that the man thought to address him at all, “Nah, he ain't one'a mine.” [break][break]

He thumbed back towards the Emboar standing behind him, the Pokemon peeking at the other man and his Furret from around Eddie's side, [break][break]

“This gal is, though. Her name's Lynch.” [break][break]

The Emboar huffed a greeting and waved, her fiery mane flaring a little brighter. [break][break]

“And I'm Eddie!” [break][break]

It'd have been kinda weird to introduce his Pokemon and not himself, Eddie reasoned. He turned back to the Slaking, eyeing it warily, [break][break]

“Do ya think he belongs ta someone, or do ya think he might be a wild one?”

So this wasn’t the slaking’s trainer, huh? Benji puffed out a sigh, and a hand reached back to ruffle his own hair. Oblivious to the way he’d taken the other man aback, he continued his observation on the massive pokemon. “Well, ain’t that the rub…” That made things just a little bit more difficult, didn’t it? Still–he wasn’t one to dwell on the negative.[break][break]
“Heya, Lynch!” His smile remained bright and wide as he waved at the emboar. Meanwhile, his furret spiraled up his leg and then crawled up the back of his shirt to hang over his shoulder with a bright chirp.[break][break]
Eddie, his mind echoed back with the introduction that came along. “Eddie. Eddie– I’ll remember that!” Maybe, hopefully.
“He’s Benji, and I’m Milo!” The doctor faltered, brows furrowing. “Er, I’m Benji, and he’s Milo.” What a goof, huh?[break][break]
His attention was, gratefully, redirected to the slaking that had remained right where they’d left it, with no inclination to make any effort in moving. Ben rubbed his chin, a furtive hum escaping. “Can’t say for sure… certainly isn’t being too aggressive, so maybe he’s gone rogue from his trainer.”[break][break]
Or maybe they just hadn’t managed to provoke it.[break][break]
He knew how to treat injuries and ailments, and he liked to think he had a good rapport with any pokemon he came across, but… “I don’t see anyone.” And he certainly can’t see around the great lug.[break][break]
Reaching out, he chances giving it a quick patpat. “How’sabout it, bud? Think ya can move?”[break][break]
The bellow he was met with sounded none too friendly as one eye cracked open to glare at the lot of them again. “Er–”

This guy was a certified goofball Eddie realized as introductions were exchanged and the other man attempted to reason with the Slaking. Charmingly so, Eddie had to admit, but this probably didn't bode well for whatever chances they had at resolving this matter amicably. [break][break]

Especially when Benji prodded the Slaking only for it to respond with an agitated roar and a glare. Eddie took a step forward, ready to square up with the Pokemon himself in case it decided to take a swing at the other man, [break][break]

“Look, pal,” Eddie addressed the Slaking with curt frustration, “Yer blockin' the road; just move yer ass and find a different spot to nap in, or I'm gonna move yer ass for ya.” [break][break]

The Slaking only replied with a grumbling snarl, equal parts annoyed and weary. Eddie sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, [break][break]

“Alright, I'm outta ideas. Think we can find somethin' ta bribe 'em with, Benji? You catch more Slaking with honey, or somethin' like that.”

If he was meant to be intimidated by the large Pokémon’s show, Benji didn’t betray it. He made an exaggerated grimace in the wake of its grumbling that failed to last long.[break][break]
The sassing that Eddie attempted on the slaking drew a robust laugh from Benji, deep from his diaphragm. A hearty sort of sound. “Dunno if these sorts can be reasoned with, my guy,” he said cheerfully, speaking with easy familiarity. As if they’d known each other far longer than just a mere few minutes.[break][break]
“More stubborn than a mudbray, I wager.” And those lil buggers could kick something awful. Ask him how he knew.[break][break]
“Hummmm..” he mused aloud, still rubbing at his chin, “that how the saying goes?” Without fanfare, he dropped his bag and let it plop against the grass. “Must got somethin’ in here,” he muttered loud enough for Eddie to hear. “No honey, and it’s mostly medical supplies, but…aha!”[break][break]
A single, toasty poffin was held aloft in triumph.[break][break]
He grinned up at the other man, expression all sunny-bright cheer. “Think this oughta do the trick? If not…I wager we can try rollin’ the big fella. Like a barrel, or sumn’…”[break][break]
The poffin was probably a way better plan.

Eddie watched with perplexed curiosity as Benji dug through his bag, looking for whatever he had that might solve their problem. Eddie had not expected the solution to come in the form of baked goods, but hey, maybe the Slaking was as easily swayed by food as he was. [break][break]

As Benji held the poffin aloft like some incredible prize, the Slaking's nose twitched with subtle curiosity. Eddie jolted back when the Pokemon's eyes suddenly sprung open wider than the man could have possibly imagined, [break][break]

“I think ya might be on ta somethin',” Eddie sputtered as the Slaking slowly rose to its feet. [break][break]

He watched with horror as the large ape, now standing taller than Eddie would have assumed from its lackadaisical repose, loomed over Benji, [break][break]

“But, uh, ya might wanna move it if ya don't want him ta take your hand off, too.” [break][break]

The Slaking opened its mouth and began to slowly lower its head; oh God, maybe it really was going to take off Benji's hand.

“Food is one of the most powerful motivators!” he replied merrily, “I know that from experience!” As in, he was personally often encouraged to action if it meant an exceptionally good snack was on the other end.[break][break]
Despite his positivity, Benji still gawked somewhat as the Slaking pulled itself up. His head craned back, eyes wide as the great sloth of a creature shadows him entirely. “Haha…he’s kinda big, isn’t he?” he babbled to Eddie, though his stare didn’t leave the Slaking.[break][break]
More nervous laughter slipped out, but he held up the poffin steadfastly. A grimace cut through his grin as its open mouth descended with the intent to swallow the treat and his arm by extension. “Upsie daisy!” He tossed the poffin upward at the last moment so that it hit the Slaking’s tongue and he could quickly retract his hand.[break][break]
He took a couple quick steps back, shoulders slumping as he let out a sigh. “Phew.” Benji’s smile returned and he flashed a thumbs up as he turned toward Eddie and his emboar. “Think that’ll do the trick?”[break][break]
Meanwhile, the Slaking chewed the snack slowly, though it hadn’t moved away quite yet. Maybe he had another one in his bag… maybe he should have thrown it off into the grass for the big guy to chase…

Eddie was relieved to see that the Slaking had not, in fact, devoured Benji's hand. He sighed with some relief, shoulders slumping, when the other man flashed him a thumbs up, [break][break]

“God, I hope so.” [break][break]

But they weren't free and clear of the massive ape yet. The Slaking seemed to be well and truly savoring its little poffin, but had yet to actually get out of their way. Maybe they needed to find something else to distract it? [break][break]

Eddie was struck by a sudden spark of inspiration, [break][break]

“Hold on, I think I got somethin' else we can use!” [break][break]

He took a moment to rummage through his pockets. House keys, wireless earbuds, a handful of loose change – ah hah! There it was! With a flourish, Eddie produced a protein bar from the deepest recesses of his pants pocket, [break][break]

“Hey, big guy!” [break][break]

The Slaking turned its head, and Eddie quickly unwrapped the treat for the ape to examine, [break][break]

“You want another snack?” [break][break]

Eddie pivoted and pulled his arm back, [break][break]

“Go long!” [break][break]

And he tossed the protein bar toward the treeline, as far as he could manage. Hopefully the Slaking would see this as an opportunity to procure another tasty treat and not as a terrible affront to its pride.

Part one: complete. Er…maybe? He’d hoped that once it was distracted by the poffin, the Slaking would plop down to the side of the road to eat the treat. But it just stood there instead, enjoying it on the spot. He took a tentative step forward. It gave an immediate rumble of warning.[break][break]
He promptly stepped back into place.[break][break]
But this was a two person endeavor! “Oh, good. Because that was for sure my last poffin,” he said as he looked down into the contents of his open bag.[break][break]
Benji watched as the Slaking’s eyes glued themselves to the protein bar. Though the big guy himself didn’t move an inch, his pupils darted about as Eddie waved the snack to and fro.[break][break]
“I think he’s buyin’ it..” He said out of the corner of his mouth, smile stretching wide with thrill as their work seemed to finally be paying off.[break][break]
When Eddie chucked the thing into the brush, the Slaking’s head turned. For a moment, it blankly regarded the foliage. Now empty, poffin-less hand drooping back to its side. Another look was spared for Eddie as it huffed through its nose–clearly annoyed that he was making it work for more food.[break][break]
But after a lengthy pause, it bellowed and lumbered off to rummage for the protein bar. Leaving the path clear for traversal. At least for now, that was.[break][break]
“Yes!” Ben pumped his fist and then turned, offering it to his fellow problem-solver. “Easy peasy!”[break][break]
